Everything on kottke.org, except those items listed below or specifically noted otherwise, is licensed by Jason Kottke under the Attribution-ShareAlike 2.0 Creative Commons license. This means you may take texts, photos, bits of code, etc. covered by the license and do with them as you wish as long as you provide credit and release the new work under the same license. I'm doing this because when something appears on my site, I've often done as much as I can with it and I'd like to see what others might do with it.

As noted above, some exceptions:

  • All comments posted to kottke.org from people other than myself. I'm thinking of requiring kottke.org commenters to license their content under a CC license when posting to my site, but for now, all comments on this site (except mine) are copyrighted by the original authors.
  • I occasionally excerpt passages from copyrighted articles or books in order to comment on or criticize them. In most cases, I've used the principle of fair use to determine what to excerpt, so if you're interested in quoting works I've excerpted, you may want to go back to the original sources to make sure you're alright regarding fair use.
  • Anything else I don't have the right to give you permission to use.

With the above, keep in mind the principle of fair use when you're deciding if you can use something, regardless of copyright, CC license, etc.
