0sil8

Not afraid to show their type in public

Public Lettering, a walk in central London explores a variety of typography around London. It reminds me somewhat of The Minneapolis Sign Project.

Using Silkscreen on kottke.org

I switched the type on my menu from Sevenet to Silkscreen. I'll be doing the same on 0sil8 shortly.

Silkscreen launched

New episode of 0sil8. It's basically an announcement for the new font I made (see below), but with a little more design. Check it out now (funk soul brother).

$35 later

$35 later, 0sil8 is mine for another year. Now if I could only get up the energy to update the damn thing. Actually, the font I've been working on is done. All I need to do is pound out a design, take care of a few other things, and BAM! new episode.

More press for Simply Porn

Simply Porn gets some more press on Wired News.

0sil8 on Netscape (again)

0sil8 is featured on Netscape's What's Cool page for the third time in about 9 months. I thought you could only get on there once. Looks like someone over there likes me.

Someone posted a German version of 0sil8 on Metababy. Cool.

New 0sil8?

The new episode of 0sil8 is almost nearing the point where I'm thinking about possibly getting close to finishing it. And then I'll probably put 0sil8 on hold for a couple months at least. There are a few things that I want to get done without worrying about feeling guilty for not updating. So yeah.

Computer nostalgia

I love nostalgia...tomorrow sucks and last week will always be the "good old days". With that in mind, here are some screenshots of a bunch of old GUIs. A friend of mine, when he left his last job, wiped the drive clean on his machine and installed Windows 2.0 on it...just for kicks. It hauled on that Pentium.

Speaking of the olden days, before I put up 0sil8, I ran a site called "Some Web Space". One of the features on this site was a page with a bunch of alternate lyrics to Alanis Morrisette's Ironic (done by myself and two friends). Enjoy.

Simply Porn on TV

Simply Porn got some play on ZDTV's Silicon Spin today....in a roundabout sort of way. If you want, you can even watch the entire show via RealVideo....or fast forward to 23:45 for the good stuff.

The Great Mother's Day Car-Be-Que of 1999

Finally, a new episode of 0sil8: The Great Mother's Day Car-Be-Que of 1999. The splash screen took forever for me to design...I didn't like any of the others I came up with and this one is just OK. Take some time to click through the pictures though...it's a neat little story.

0sil8's third birthday

0sil8 is three years old today. Wow.

Remember a Movie

A new 0sil8 appears on the horizon. Remember a Movie has been over a year in the making. Is it worth the wait? Probably not, but there's some good stuff there.

Simply Porn happenings

Tons of things have been happening with 0sil8 so I will summarize. The Simply Porn ads are still off of my site, but can be reached on several other sites (a list is available). They've also garnered some press coverage, most notably in The Wall Street Journal, news.com, The San Jose Mercury, The St. Paul Pioneer Press, and Salon.

0sil8 was selected as Rave of the Day over on Netscape's What's Cool page.

April Fools Day

Well, April Fools Day has come and gone. Much merriment was had by all. Several Web sites pulled pranks with various degrees of success and excellence. One prank that I wish had been pulled was the mess that I've created over at 0sil8. Unfortunately, this isn't an April Fool's joke. On the bright side, 0sil8's been getting a lot of traffic because of it, and I'm learning all sorts of neat things about the law, big corporations, and "the little guy". Hopefully I'll publish it somewhere sometime.

Simply Porn

A new episode of 0sil8: Simply Porn. It's a parody of 3Com's new ad campaign featuring a nude woman holding a Palm V organizer. The ads are tastefully done (sort of), mine are not.

Best personal site at SXSW

0sil8 won best personal site at SXSW. Thank god there were no speeches; they just handed me the award, turned me around to pose for the photogs, and off I went. I hope they post pictures of the winners...I had to have one of the goofiest-ever looks on my face.

kottke.org redesign

Also, kottke.org is all new. New graphics. New content. New everything. You may have noticed that I moved notes from 0sil8 to kottke.org. They will live here from now on.

SXSW Interactive Web Competition finalist

0sil8 is a finalist in the SXSW Interactive Web Competition in the personal site catagory. I'm competing against two friends, a Flash-based Gabocorp ripoff, and a site which really isn't a personal site. Godspeed to Maura, Flaunt, and, if I may be so bold, to 0sil8.

Send a Li'l Lovin'

I'm off to Mexico in a week and a half. Excited? Yes! I'll tell you all about it when I get back.

Send your favorite celebrity to the one you love, now on 0sil8. Send a Li'l Lovin'.

0sil8: 13.013 words

A new episode of 0sil8 as well. 13.013 words.

0sil8 in The Pioneer Press

A review of 0sil8 appears in the St. Paul Pioneer Press today. My favorite quote: "And, by the way, when typing the address, remember that only the 8 is a numeral." Great. Exactly wrong.

Kottke.org domain is here

Also, kottke.org is finally here. I'm not entirely sure what I'm going to do with it yet, but I'm sure it'll be fun and wacky, whatever it is.

I moved my resume/portfolio onto kottke.org because it really doesn't belong on 0sil8. 0sil8.notes will also probably be moving over here as well, although it will still be linked from 0sil8. You probably won't even be able to tell the difference.

Suck on Big Weenie

Somehow, my online experience is now complete. Suck for Dummies got mentioned on a site called Big Weenie. Just click on the little illustrated hot dog, and you're wisked away to 0sil8. If only life were that easy.

Apple Dodge Neon press

The Apple Dodge Neon gets some press in the online version of the Red Herring. Turns out my little parody was somewhat of a prediction as well.

0sil8 on Netscape

0sil8 appeared on Netscape's What's New page today. That's kind of odd considering 0sil8 has been around since May 1996. Good review, though.

Remember a Movie

New episode of 0sil8 today. Go submit your movie reviews and I'll post them in an upcoming episode.

Variation on an old theme

I've got a new idea for a web site. Actually, it's really a variation on an old theme, but it won't be a part of 0sil8. I'm going to become one of those people with multiple concurrently updated personal web projects.

I also started working on a new episode of 0sil8 last night. Unfortunately, I didn't get too far before I scrapped the whole idea. I've never done that before. Usually, I muddle through until something halfway decent pops out. Not this time. The question is: am I getting smarter about choosing projects or just impatient and lazy?

Stealing from 0sil8

Another stolen something from 0sil8. Someone finally took an idea. Cool.

0sil8 foolishness

As requested, more 0sil8 foolishness:

Jesse steals part of 0sil8 and puts it up at Quasistatic.

Caroline doesn't know what she's going to do with this, but here it is. She is also running Croon, which is a really great idea for a site.

Jason blithers and blathers about design on Glassdog.

It's come to my attention that there are certain former overlords out there that don't "get" 0sil8. I couldn't be happier.

Plus, I'm turning 25 in two days. And I'm getting the best gift in the whole world. :)

Stealing 0sil8

Well, it's been a bit since I urged people to steal my Web site. Here are some early results:

http://www.aberratum.com/0sil8.html
http://andrew.newdream.net
http://www.vitaflo.com/lab/0sil8/index.html
http://www.flawed.com/0sil8/index2.html

Have you seen 0sil8 anywhere else? Do you care? Email.

Cease and desist

I got my first cease and desist letter today. Sort of. Here's the letter:

Jason,

I am contacting you to let you know that the site:

http://www.0sil8.com/episodes/98/05/06/index2.html

is in violation of logo usage and copyright infringement and you could face legal litigation if the usage continues.

Thank you,

Matthew Barnes
Senior Multimedia Designer

This letter is really strange for two reasons:

a) It's not from a lawyer. It's from the "Senior Multimedia Designer" from a company called Rossroy Interactive. I guess this guy is cheaper than a lawyer. Of course, the lawyer might have realized that the Apple Dodge Neon page is a parody of both the Dodge Neon and the Apple iMac and is therefore probably protected under copyright laws.

b) It's unclear what is wrong with the page. Is it the Dodge logo or the Apple one? I did some checking and Rossroy Interactive is in Michigan...making it a good bet that the Dodge logo is the one in question. It might have been nice of them to mention that.

Anyway, I don't think I'll be taking the page down right now. I've got a couple letters to write and some legal codes to pore over.

New 0sil8

New 0sil8. Yay! And only 20 days late.

Web98

I'm going to Web98 in a week. I'm pretty excited. I get to: see San Francisco for the first time, meet a bunch of people F2F that I have corresponded with via email, go to a big Web conference for the first time, and be part of the Cool Site in a Day event. Representin' east side style. Word.

In other news, 0sil8 should be up and running again before I go. Now, I'm not promising anything, but that's the plan. So, look for a new episode by the end of the week.

XML buzz and reality

I'm trying to get my mind around this whole XML thing. There's the buzz and then there's the reality and I understand none of it. At first glance, it seemed that XML was going to be a bigger, better version of CSS. Now, it appears that XML deals more with programming than it does with interface.

I also learned that you can access parameters passed within URLs with JavaScript. This opens up some interesting possibilites for 0sil8 I think. Very interesting.

Recursive backslapping

OK, kids. All this birthday stuff has to quit. It's getting a little...oh...over the top. First it was The Fray. Then, it was Afterdinner. Now, Glassdog.

It was fun once, cute twice, but now it's kinda silly and on the verge of becoming obligatory.

Or maybe I just don't like it because no one will ever do anything like that for 0sil8. And no one should. Please, let's all stop the madness.

The Post-Feminist Playground

New stuff: The Digital Newlywed Game on The Post-Feminist Playground.

0sil8 won a Glammy.
