Even though a Rubik's Cube has about 43 quintillion (that's 43000000000000000000) possible configurations, it's been proven possible to solve a cube starting in any one of those configurations in 26 moves or less. "Most researchers believe that just 20 steps are enough to solve any Rubik's Cube, but no one has proved it yet."
Awesome. Director Michel Gondry recently posted a YouTube video where he is pictured solving a Rubik's Cube with his feet. A few days later, this response debunks Gondry's effort as a stunt. When I read the title, I half-expected the person to claim that Gondry had used CGI to fake the solving, but that wasn't likely because Gondry doesn't like to use special effects in his films. The actual answer is decided low-tech and clever, just like his movies. BTW, here's someone solving the Cube with one hand in 20 seconds. (via cf)
Update: Regarding the CGI, then again.... (thx, oscar)
20 seconds to solve a Rubik's Cube? With one hand? Blimey.
Rubik's Cube world record broken International Rubik's Cube Competition: 11.13 seconds. But the competition was best of three and the record-holder was beaten by 15 yo from Pasedena with an average lower time.
If you've got a Rubik's, yo, this will solve it. Check out the link while cubist revolves it... (thx keith)
