Meet the US cricket team. Although US interest in cricket is small, the team competed in the Champions Trophy tournament, albeit at 1000-1 odds.

if it's any consolation to you, in the light of getting a miserable kicking by the australians, at least the US team scored more than twice the lowest ever one day international score - posted, interestingly enough, by canada (who only managed to squeeze out a hopeless 28 runs).

Its funny that you say New Zealand is one of the top two teams. They are no where close to the top. Australia is the best.
If its any consolation USA beat Zimbabwe in a practice match. Zimbabwe were a above average team until the white players in the team were banned by Mugabe's cronies. That is an exceptional effort for USA!

Surprised to read about cricket here. Coincidently BBC News has an article about Selling cricket to America.
Gary Hopkins has been given the task of raising the profile of the game in the US. "There's absolutely no chance that any American will watch five days of cricket," he says.
His plan is to introduce Twenty20 matches with some of the world's cricketing stars taking part.
"Twenty20 fits all the things that Americans like about their sports. You can package it and make it exciting and you can get in, watch it, and get out again quickly."
Briefly the traditonal game of cricket was played over five days with each team having two innings. Later the one-day format was introduced with each team having a single innings of 50 overs, the Champions Trophy is an example of this.
Twenty20 is a very recent innovation with each side having a single innings of 20 overs. It's designed to be an exciting version of the game that last only 2-3 hours so as to appeal to the younger generation of sports fans.

Twenty20. Feh. Even One-Day cricket is hit and giggle. Besides, when Australia plays tests, they rarely go out to five days.

I love reading articles about cricket because, as an American, all the words make sense individually but mean virtually nothing to me in that context. From the Times of India: "After Sri Lanka had reduced Zimbabwe batting to a sorry stage by the halfway mark of their innings Chigumbura stepped in to stop the rot with a timely fifty that allowed the Africans to consolidate." That makes absolutely no sense to me. I love it. Furhter down the article, though: "Chigumbura was LBW to Upul Chandana at the fag end of the innings for 57 off 71 balls with
5 fours." That sounds vaguely NSFW.

Unless of course they are playing India. ;-)

Hopefully this won't spoil anyone's cricket viewing but to no one's surprise, the US has lost to New Zealand and Australia so far, the two top-ranked teams in the tourney.
