Looks like Salon is going to start doing weblogs at blogs.salon.com, either for Salon writers or for their readers (or both). (via rogers)
Update: Has their server been hacked already?
That's not the only good news: they also appear to run Apache 2, which quite a thing in an environment as Salon.
Dave kinda hints at a project with, "A famous publication" in yestday's Scripting.com
Whats the advantage to using Radio? Why not use something like Movabletype?
Oh sure, heh. Mention where you got the info, but don't mention that they got it from me, who managed to get to this scoop first. ;)
Oops - did that look like a hack?
Sorry - that's not the intention. Just wanted to be the first non-Userland user on the server ;-)
(After all, it is a community server: like my own PyCS, it's configured to give a bit of webspace out to anyone who asks. Anyone who points a copy of Radio at http://rcs.salon.com/RPC2 can start a blog there right now. The static server seems to password protected at the moment, although this will presumably come off once somebody makes an official announcement.)
Apologies for any inconvenience caused to the UserLand crew.
Oops - did that look like a hack?
A little bit, yeah. I don't exactly know how the community server works, but I can't imagine that Salon will want just anyone with a copy of Radio making weblogs willy nilly. Or maybe they will, who knows?
And yes, blogs.salon.com has been locked down with a password...which is probably what they should have done in the first place.
No word yet from Salon or Userland about this, apart from a tease yesterday from Dave on Scripting News. Dave must be chomping at the bit to post about it on Scripting but can't because of the lack of an official announcement.
Looking forward to hearing more ;-)
If they do intend to have some sort of access control on posting, I wonder how they're planning on doing it.
I guess they could put a web interface on the signup process for accounts on rcs.salon.com. Currently you can use the xmlStorageSystem API (the way Radio talks to RCS) to create accounts there.
This page has been avalible on and off throughout the weekend. Apparently this is going to be another service from Salon.
It is unclear however whether this will be for Premium users or just anyone. Though I am willing to bet that this is going to be for paid-users only, because Salon is struggling to stay alive as it is.
