Commercial from Soviet-era Estonia that makes eating meat seem so glamorous. (via smashing telly)
On-set photos of David Lynch and cast members from the final episode of Twin Peaks. (via waxy)
Behind-the-scenes of a Gucci perfume ad directed by Lynch, referencing his own most recent feature, Inland Empire. Finished commercial here. (via spoutblog)
Upon watching Inland Empire, I was so immediately immersed, my first thought was that David Lynch should only ever shoot video. Apparently, he feels the same.
Remember Dove's Evolution video of a fashion model going from drab to fabulous with the help of makeup and Photoshop? They've got a new video out called Onslaught in which we see the barrage of images that are directed at young girls each day. BTW, Dove's parent company makes all sorts of products that may contibute to the problem that Dove is attacking here. (via debbie millman)
Scott Aaronson, Ph.D: Australian actresses are plagiarizing my quantum mechanics lecture to sell printers. Here's a video of the printer commercial and the lecture notes from which the dialogue is taken.
Nice micro-movie/commercial for VW. A YouTube version is also available (with poorer video and audio quality).
I really like those UPS whiteboard commercials. Turns out the actor is the creative director for the campaign, Errol Morris directed them, and the music in the ads is by The Postal Service.
50 greatest commercials of the 1980s. Amazingly includes video of every single commercial...prepare to waste your entire afternoon. (thx, art)
Update: Here are dozens of additional 80s commercials. (thx, david)
More on the craptacular "Our Country" Chevrolet commercials. The new ones, not mentioned in this article or on Slate, with images of exclusively white, male, heterosexual truck lovers, are possibly even worse. "This is our country...no chicks, homos, Mexicans, or black people welcome."
Screw Chevy: "It's not OK to use images of Rosa Parks, MLK, the Vietnam War, the Katrina disaster, and 9/11 to sell pickup trucks."
Update: In a hamfisted tribute on the occasion of her death, Apple posted a Rosa Parks "Think Different" ad on their home page. (thx, mark)
BMW commercial featuring the beautiful kinetic sculptures of Theo Jansen, who I covered previously on kottke.org. (via poptech)
Review of the current crop of Apple "I'm a Mac..." commercials. Verdict? The PC is more like-able than the Mac. "[The ads] are conceptually brilliant, beautifully executed, and highly entertaining. But they don't make me want to buy a Mac."
Ahhhhh!! Freaky Gatorade commerical with big-headed children. Like nails on a chalkboard, this is. Reminds me a bit of Loretta Lux's photographs though.
I can't tell if this is a joke on TBS's part or not, but this is an actual promo of theirs for The Lord of the Rings movies done in the style of alternate trailers like The Shining and Brokeback to the Future. "It sucks to be Frodo."
Update: Looks like they're having a bit of fun over at TBS...check out their other promos.
